Create Corridor Pitch Presentation; Finish Teacher/Student Meetings

Welcome! Please sit with Habitat Corridor groups today.

Today: Create Habitat Corridor Project Pitch Presentation slides with your group; be ready to present next class (Thursday)

Essential Question: How can we conserve urban biodiversity as Portland Metro area's population continues to grow?

Your Engineering Design Challenge was to design an urban habitat corridor for a species of animal living in the Portland Metro region that connects a smaller habitat to the anchor habitat of Forest Park to improve the survival of your target species. (location can be adjusted to accommodate species' range)

You Defined the Problem:
  1. What are the needs (food, water, shelter) of your particular animal species?
  2. Does your animal species require a certain territory size?
  3. What is the scale of the territory needed by your animal?
  4. Any migration behavior you might need to account for?
  5. What conflicts exist near your potential habitat corridor? (i.e. if your area is used for industrial or residential purposes?
  6. Are there major roads separating your smaller habitat from Forest Park?)
  7. Decide whether the corridor should be fully or partially protected, and justify that decision.

Criteria & Constraints:
-You must demonstrate how your project addresses the specific needs of your target animal species.

Limitation Discussion:
Considering your proposed design...
What limitations might you face in implementing your corridor design?
What financial costs will impact the implementation of your design?
Provide reasoning for each limitation you propose.

Today's task: Use this GOOGLE SLIDE TEMPLATE to create a presentation of your habitat corridor to pitch to the City of Portland (Request for Proposal HERE for reference if needed)

Teacher/Student Conferences; Make up work time

Thanks for your reflection writing - good practice for you and good feedback for me!

Sit in new Q2 seats (update seating chart if needed)

Phone turn-in option

Honors option HERE for Quarter 2 (part of Sem 1 grade)

Teacher/Student Conferences
-Fill out falf sheet check-in form before I get to you
-Be ready to discuss options, etc.
-Get a Chromebook if you need it to check Synergy, Classroom, etc.

Once we have had our conference, please use the time to finish any missing work, finish habitat corridor project, etc.

Wednesday, November 13, 2019

New Seating Chart; Name Tent Round II & Sharing; Quarter 1 Reflection; Review norms, expectations, policies, grading

New seating chart
-Pick a popsicle stick and pick your own seat at your new randomly assigned table
-Try this table out for today, we'll adjust if necessary
-Ms. Ferro reserves the right to make adjustments if needed

Use the other side of your name tent to do another Four Corners:
Upper Left - Most interesting topic so far
Upper Right - Favorite ice cream flavor
Bottom Left - Most looking forward to ___ this quarter
Bottom Right - Number of siblings

Pair share at your table and be prepared to introduce your partner to the class, picking one or two attributes to share out in our class circle

Welcome to Quarter 2 of Biology!

In your notebook...
Quarter 1 Reflection Writing:
1. What did I do well in Quarter 1? What things did I accomplish? What am I most proud of?
2. If given a second chance, what would I change about Quarter 1? Is there anything you wish you would have done differently? Why?
3. Who is someone that helped you out in Quarter 1? If you didn't make that connection, who is someone at school, home, etc. that you might be able to reach out to for support in Quarter 2?
4. What is a personal goal you have for Quarter 2? What is an actionable item you can do as the first step towards achieving this goal?
5. What science topic do you want to learn about in Quarter 2?

B--R--E--A--K

Review Class Norms - any changes?

Ms. Ferro's #1 non-negotiable rule: RESPECT
Also...
-Come to class prepared, on time
-Notebooks and materials out, phones away when bell rings

Friday: In-class Student Teacher Conferences for Biology!

Dear Students,
1. I believe in you.
2. I trust in you.
3. You are listened to.
4. You are cared for.
5. You are important.
6. You will succeed.
Love,
Ms. Ferro

Any additional class time can be used to finish Habitat Corridor projects.

Maker Space! (Day 2/Final Day)

Stop in S-020 to drop off backpacks and then head up to Maker Space (S-149) to get started right away and finish your project! I'll wait here for the bell then take attendance upstairs in Maker Space.

Continue Habitat Corridor Project (slides HERE)

Before today, you should have completed these 2 tasks:

1. Identify the Problem HERE (do 1 per group, share w/all members)
2. Design a prototype HERE

By now, you should have a focal species, two natural areas that you will connect, a sketch of a prototype for your design, and a prototype that you started on Wed. 11/6.

Today, use the Engineering Design Tracker HERE to update your progress and get feedback from your peers on your design with the last 10 minutes of class before clean up.

Begin cleanup 10 minutes before end of class and go back to S-020 with 5 minutes left of class to get backbacks.
